How Much Loan Can a Doctor or CA Get Without Collateral?

The single most common question from qualified professionals shopping for a loan: how much can I actually borrow without putting up collateral? The honest answer depends on three things, profession, practice vintage, and income, more than anything else.

Typical Unsecured Ceilings by Profession (2026)

ProfessionTypical Unsecured Ceiling
Doctors (established practice)₹50 to 75 lakh
Chartered Accountants₹30 to 50 lakh
Lawyers₹20 to 40 lakh
Architects & Company Secretaries₹20 to 40 lakh

Actual amount depends heavily on individual income, CIBIL score, and practice vintage, these are typical ranges, not guarantees.

The Three Factors That Actually Decide Your Number

  • Practice vintage. Most banks need 3+ years of independent practice to offer the higher end of these ranges. A professional with 1 to 2 years of practice will typically see a materially lower ceiling, or be asked for a co-applicant or partial collateral.
  • Declared income (ITR). Banks generally cap the loan amount as a multiple of your average annual income from the last 2 to 3 ITRs, commonly 3x to 5x annual income for unsecured professional loans. A CA showing ₹15 lakh average annual income might see an unsecured ceiling around ₹45 to 60 lakh, near the top of the typical range for that profession.
  • CIBIL score. A 750+ score doesn't just get you a better rate, it often unlocks a meaningfully higher unsecured ceiling too, since the bank's risk model treats it as materially lower default probability.

What Reduces Your Unsecured Ceiling

  • Existing EMI obligations (home loan, car loan, personal loan) reduce your available repayment capacity, and therefore your eligible new loan amount, regardless of profession.
  • Inconsistent income across the last 2 to 3 ITRs, even if the most recent year was strong, raises questions the underwriting model penalizes.
  • Employed professionals (a doctor on a hospital salary, for instance) are often assessed differently, sometimes more favorably as a salaried applicant, sometimes less favorably than an independent practitioner, depending on the specific lender's policy.

If You Need More Than the Unsecured Ceiling

Going above your unsecured ceiling generally means offering collateral, property, fixed deposits, or other approved securities, which also typically lowers your interest rate by 1% to 2% compared to the unsecured rate for the same amount. If the amount you need exceeds what any lender will offer unsecured, comparing the collateral route against simply waiting and building more practice vintage is worth doing before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a co-applicant increase my unsecured professional loan eligibility?

Yes, adding a co-applicant with independent income (a spouse, for instance) increases the combined income base the lender assesses against, which can raise your eligible unsecured amount meaningfully.

Can I get an unsecured professional loan with a CIBIL score below 700?

It's harder but not impossible. Some NBFCs will consider scores in the 650 to 700 range, at a materially higher interest rate and often a lower unsecured ceiling than the ranges above.

Is the unsecured ceiling the same across all banks?

No, it varies meaningfully by lender, and by how aggressively that lender wants to grow professional-loan lending at a given time. Comparing 2 to 3 lenders rather than accepting the first offer is worth the effort.
