Frequently Asked Questions
What is the GST rate on goods and services in India? +
India has 4 main GST slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essential goods like food grains are exempt (0%), while luxury and sin goods attract 28%. Most services fall under 18%.
How do I calculate GST amount from a base price? +
Multiply the base price by the GST rate. For ₹10,000 at 18%: GST = ₹1,800, Total = ₹11,800. For intra-state: split equally as CGST 9% + SGST 9%. For inter-state: full 18% as IGST.
How do I calculate base price from a GST-inclusive amount? +
Reverse GST formula: Base = GST-inclusive amount ÷ (1 + GST rate/100). For ₹11,800 at 18%: Base = ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000. GST = ₹1,800.
What is CGST, SGST, and IGST? +
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are charged on intra-state (same state) transactions — each at half the total GST rate. IGST (Integrated GST) at the full rate applies to inter-state transactions and imports.
Is GST applicable on all transactions? +
No. Transactions below ₹40 lakh annual turnover (₹20 lakh for services) are exempt. Certain goods like petroleum, alcohol, and electricity are outside GST. Exports are zero-rated.
