Gold Loan vs Personal Loan: Which Should You Take?

Both are quick, unsecured-feeling ways to raise cash, but only one of them is actually unsecured. A gold loan is secured against your gold and prices lower because of it. A personal loan is unsecured and prices higher because the bank has nothing to repossess if you stop paying, only your credit history and income to underwrite against.

Where Gold Loan Wins

If your CIBIL score is weak or thin (little to no credit history), a gold loan is often the only fast, affordable option, since most gold loan lenders barely look at your credit report; the gold itself is the security. It's also faster for genuine emergencies, and at a bank the rate can undercut even a good personal loan offer.

Where Personal Loan Wins

If you don't want to risk your gold, or don't have enough of it to cover the amount you need, a personal loan is the only route. It also makes sense if your CIBIL score is strong (750+), since at that tier personal loan rates from banks can match or beat gold loan NBFC rates, without putting a physical asset on the line.

A Worked Example

Say you need ₹3 lakh for a medical expense. A gold loan against jewellery worth ₹4.5 lakh at 11% for 12 months costs roughly ₹19,800 in total interest (bullet repayment, interest-only monthly). A personal loan for the same ₹3 lakh at 13% for 12 months, EMI-based, costs roughly ₹21,500 in total interest, similar cost, but no gold changes hands and there's no risk of losing it if you're a few days late on a payment (though late payment still hurts your credit score either way).

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is faster to get, gold loan or personal loan?

Gold loan, almost always. Many lenders disburse within an hour of gold valuation, versus 1 to 5 working days for a personal loan that requires income and credit verification.

Is a gold loan safer than a personal loan?

Safer for your credit score if you might struggle to repay, since default only risks the pledged gold, not a formal default mark plus recovery action. But it does mean risking a physical, often sentimental, asset, which a personal loan never puts at risk.

Can I take a personal loan and a gold loan together?

Yes, there's no rule against holding both, and lenders assess each independently based on your income and existing obligations (FOIR). Just make sure your combined EMI stays within a comfortable share of your monthly income.
